Dining Room Refresh with Birch Lane

I’m coming at you today with a really exciting post that was a lot of fun for me to work on, both creatively and professionally. I’ve partnered up with Birch Lane to bring you my picks for a dining room refresh! So if your dining room is in need of some updates or a fresh new look, keep scrolling my friends!

I feel like in a lot of cases, the dining room can be one of the most neglected spaces in a home. It’s not a space that’s used often, and it typically takes a backseat when it comes to decorating and updating. Here’s my perspective on the often mistreated dining room – while it may not be used on a daily basis, the memories made in this room are usually some of the most treasured and special in our lives. It’s where we gather with family to eat Thanksgiving and Christmas meals, or where we sing happy birthday to our children and celebrate other momentous occasions with friends and loved ones. When I think about my favorite holiday memories, most of them took place in my dining room! With everything that’s going on right now, it’s more important than ever to gather with the ones you love (in CDC approved group sizes, of course) and spend quality time together. Let’s make sure that your next memories of your dining room are upgraded with a stylish update. Without further ado, here are my picks from Birch Lane!

When designing a space, I like to start with an anchor piece. That can be a lot of different things to different people. Maybe it’s a rug you fell in love with or a light fixture you just had to have. This piece will serve as the anchor and inspiration for the rest of your design. It’s helpful to have that one main aesthetic to focus on when choosing the other elements in the room. For me in a dining room, the anchor is the table and chairs, so that’s where I started my search. When I saw the Stedman Dining Table, that was it! From the reclaimed elm wood surface to the modern black metal trestle base, I was sold. It’s the perfect blend of rustic + modern. I think the Poynter Upholstered Dining Chairs pair perfectly with it, and they come in three color options and in sets of two. The round, rattan backs are a great way to introduce a little something trendy to the space without sacrificing a classic look and feel.

So let’s analyze the features of our anchor pieces: we’ve got light wood tones and natural wicker elements as well as black metal. I kept these things in mind when browsing for the rest of the room. Next up is the Montague 8-Light Pendant. It has a traditional lantern silhouette but feels clean and modern in the black finish. I love the simplicity of this fixture! Now we’ve got a lot of black going on, and don’t get me wrong, I LOVE me some black. But I wanted to break it up a bit and introduce a little color. A rug is the perfect piece to do this with! I chose the Isanotski Oriental Area Rug because it has beautiful, muted earth tones that pair really well with the natural elements in the furniture. It also incorporates the most beautiful blue hue that I think gives this space the perfect little color pop without being too loud.

Now that we’ve got the main focal points of the room, let’s move on to the other elements! No dining room is complete with out a buffet or sideboard. For me, storage in the dining room is essential. I chose the Butler Sideboard, and wow is this piece of furniture gorgeous! Cane furniture is so trendy right now, and this piece gives you the look at a closeout price! Be sure and checkout the closeup photo of the detail on Birch Lane’s website. Not only is this piece beautiful, but it’s also very functional. It has built in shelving and drawers on the inside! It also ties in the natural elements from the dining tabletop and the rattan chair backs, so it’s a win-win in my book.

Now that we’ve covered furniture, it’s time to decorate and accessorize! The fun stuff, am I right? I wanted to dress up the sideboard and bring in a little black to this area to tie into the black features in the center of the room. The Hutchins Arch Accent Mirror and Hershel 27″ Black Table Lamp are the perfect pieces for this. I love an arched windowpane mirror, and this will also help to reflect natural light and help make the room feel larger and brighter. And the industrial feel of the lamp base coordinates perfectly with the table legs! Did you forget about the blue in the rug? I wanted to make sure to incorporate some blue in the accessories to make sure that the blue rug didn’t look and feel out of place. This also helps bring in a little more color, and these Blue Trumpet Table Vases were the perfect solution!

When I’m decorating, I always try and bring the outside in with natural elements. An easy way to do that is with plants, greenery and florals! To help fill out this space, I chose the Artificial Foliage Tree, which is a faux fiddle leaf fig tree. My recommendation is to purchase the largest size that your ceilings will allow to really create some drama. This is also a great way to fill in those awkward corners! be sure to place the tree in a basket to hide the pot and add in some texture. I chose the Tall Round Floor Wicker Basket for it’s natural color. Again, this also helps to tie in the elements from the chairs and sideboard so that when we’re done, we have a cohesive space. The Phalaenopsis Orchid Floral Arrangement in Vase also adds some softness too the sideboard area and helps break up the blacks.

Last, but certainly not least, it’s time to think about place settings. No dining table is complete without the perfect tablescape! If this feels overwhelming, chargers are a great place to start. They serve as the base and are a fun way to dress up your everyday dishes. I’m partial to white dishes, and these have some really subtle texture that makes them unique and stand out. Top off your place setting with these linen napkins in blue gray and black bark wood napkin rings. Both come in sets of four and are the perfect pieces to top off your tablescape!
