Master Bedroom Refresh

While the rest of the Instagram/Blogging world was on an organizational kick after the holidays, I was in a completely different headspace! I got the urge to change some things up in my master bedroom, but didn’t want to spend a whole lot in the process. Keep reading for some budget friendly room refresh tips and to see what new items I introduced into my space!

I had one goal in mind when I started this refresh project, and that was SIMPLICITY. I wanted less of everything and a cleaner, more minimal look. So that meant eliminating the amount of pillows on my bed as well as the art on my wall. Here’s what the space looked like before:

Between the patterns on my bedding and rug and the gallery wall, things were starting to feel too cluttered. Again, my goal was simplicity, so I started with the easiest way to change up a space – textiles! Changing out a few throw pillows or your comforter/duvet can make a huge impact on a space. You could also think about adding window treatments if you don’t already have some, or adding/switching up a rug. These small changes can make a big impact and can easily fit any budget.

I wanted a pretty big change when it came to bedding, so I decided to change it all up and go for something in a solid color but still wanted it to have some texture. I went with a super affordable waffle weave duvet cover set from Target in white (shop it here). It’s well under $100, so the price point is fantastic. It has washed well and is the perfect off-white color. *Please note that the reviews for this duvet in the colored options are not good – apparently the color bleeds in the wash* I can only speak to the white, which has no pigment, so it has washed perfectly fine!

My previous bedding had a crazy pillow set up – 3 euros, 2 king, and 3 standard sized pillows. It was a lot to store and also was a pain to make the bed and set up all the pillows. This time around I kept it simple with the two king sized shams that my duvet cover set came with, three square throw pillows and one large lumbar pillow. My room instantly felt more modern with this new bed set up, and the overall investment was manageable! You really will be shocked just how much a simple textile change can have on a space!

I also decided to change out the color of my sheets. I’ve got a lot of beige tones happening in my bedroom, and I wanted to break up the white of my bedding so it didn’t feel too out of place and blended better with the surroundings. Don’t ever feel like you need to match your sheets to your duvet or comforter! It’s a great way to add in some color and is an unexpected and fresh design element. I went with my favorite Amazon sheets in the Bone color. The reason I love these sheets so much is that they truly have DEEP pockets. We have a pillow top mattress and then have an extra mattress pad on top, so our bed is very tall. It was a struggle to find sheets deep enough to fit everything! We’ve used these sheets for years and they are super soft and wash well (shop them here).

Just a quick side note about our pillow top mattress cover. This is hands down one of the best purchases I’ve ever made on Amazon. It is insanely comfortable and has given our old, tired mattress new life. Do yourself a favor and snag one ASAP. You won’t regret it! Shop it here.

Another great way to refresh a space is to change up or add some art! I previously had a gallery wall above my bed. I’ve had this set up for years and honestly, some of the pieces were feeling dated and needed to go. I decide to simplify what I hung over my bed and went with two simple frames in black, to tie in the color of my mirrors above my bedside tables. These Target frames are super affordable and are honestly really great buys because of their versatility. They come in multiple colors and sizes, but I chose the black 14″x18″ (shop them here).

Choosing art for the frames was a little tough, mainly because there are endless options online! You can go bold with color and really make a statement, or keep it simple and understated with something more minimal. I went for the latter and chose these bird study sketches. I loved the beige background, which helped tie in the color of my sheets, walls and furniture. The best part about this art is that it’s affordable and available for digital download on Etsy. Art can get pricey, so this is a great budget friendly way to incorporate art into your home. I always use Mpix Giclee Prints on their fine art paper. Shop my art picks here and here.

And that’s it! These simple changes have completely transformed the space and it now has a completely different feel! I kept my existing rug, furniture and window treatments and just switched out my bedding textiles and the art above my bed. These were easy, affordable changes that made a dramatic impact. Shop the pieces I chose below, and be sure to follow along on Instagram for your daily dose of decor! I will also include some of my other favorite blue throw pillows at the end in case mine eventually sell out.
