Fall Decorating

Fall Living Room Styling

It’s mid-september which means fall is officially in full swing! Wether you’re experiencing fall weather where you live or not (still no cool fronts here in Houston…), summer is definitely over and it’s time for fall decorating! I like to keep things subtle this time of year with transitional decor pieces and just a few pumpkins. We go full on Halloween crazy at the end of the month so subtlety is key for me right now.

Today I’m sharing my fall living room styling tips and tricks! Keep reading for ways to seamlessly integrate your fall decor into your spaces without having to re-style every single item in your room. There is a key point that I think will help a lot of you who struggle with seasonal decorating!

I’m going to link up everything I can throughout the post. If you don’t see an item linked, it’s probably vintage, from a previous season or already sold out. I’ll do my best to include duplicates wherever possible. Feel free to drop a comment or DM me on Instagram if you have any questions! I’ll also include some similar Amazon items at the end of the post.

Tip #1: Keep it simple! You DON’T need pumpkins in every nook and cranny of your space. If that’s your style, then by all means go for it, but if you have a hard time with seasonal styling, stick to the less is more principle. It will save you some money in the long run, too.

Tip #2: Stick to your existing color palette and only add in colors that work within it. This is key. Orange is a hard color to work with, and it doesn’t incorporate easily into a lot of spaces. Non-traditional fall colors work just as well and they are also very on trend this season! My living room is mainly full of shades of neutrals and blues, so I stuck within this color palette. With fall decorating you want to incorporate a sense of warmth, and there are ways to do this without using orange pumpkins! You can add warmth by adding in natural wood tones and shades of gold or brass in your accessories. Amber glass jars and vases are also a great way to do this, and the deeper orange tone is easier to work with. So is seasonal artwork and natural dried stems. Use white or neutral pumpkins in place of traditional orange ones. You can also use other fall produce like apples, pears or figs in place of pumpkins! See my photos below for inspiration, and read my shelf styling tips here.

Tip #3: Don’t forget your textiles! Throw pillows are an inexpensive way to refresh a room. You’d be surprised how such a small change can make such a big impact! To save money, try and incorporate some of your year round pillows with the new fall textiles. For example, the light striped pillows are on my sofa all spring and summer, but I mixed in some cozy fall plaids and neutral embroidered pumpkin lumbar pillows and voila! Instant fall refresh that works within my color palette. Plaids are a great textile to use this time of year. They add in a lot of coziness to a space, even when they are in cool toned colors like these blue ones I used in my living room.

Tip #4: Use your old pillows as decor! If you’re like me, you’ve got baskets in your living room. Not only do they provide some great texture, but they are also great for functional storage. I stuck the lumbar pillows that I switched out into the baskets on either sides of my couches. Not only do they work with my color palette but they look super cute styled this way with throw blankets!

That’s a wrap on my fall living room styling this year! Main takeaways – keep it subtle and simple and work within your existing color palette. Add warmth with your textiles and accessories by using natural wood tones, amber glass, metals like gold or brass, and your greenery. Your goal is to make things feel warm and cozy, and you can definitely accomplish that without orange pumpkins if you need to! Be sure to follow along on Instagram for more fall decorating inspiration. And get ready to go full on Halloween crazy soon! It’s my favorite holiday and my kids absolutely love it, so I try and make it special for them. Happy decorating to you all!

I love the takeaway to work with your current color palette and cozy it up. No one needs to fill their home with orange pumpkins unless that is their thing. I also appreciate the suggestion to use baskets to store extra pillows and blankets.
