Fall Decorating

Transitional Fall Decor

You know that awkward time of year where fall is approaching but it still feels like summer outside? I don’t know about you, but I’m definitely ready for the cooler temps and all things pumpkin, but we’re just not quite there yet. But kids are heading back to school and summer is drawing to a close, and it just feels like time for a change, am I right? Well I’m here today to help with the transition between summer and fall. It’s still very hot in Houston and I just feel silly even thinking about breaking out my pumpkins, but there are still lots of ways to start transitioning your home decor and getting ready for fall. Even better, a lot of these items can still be incorporated year round!

I like to start by adding in subtle warmth to my spaces. Think natural wood tones, metals like gold or brass, and amber glass votives and vases. switch out your summer florals for simple greenery and dried natural stems. If you prefer a little more color in your home, stick to jewel tones (emerald, amethyst, ruby, sapphire, topaz & citrine, for example). This way when you do bring out your pumpkins and other traditional fall decor, they will blend in seamlessly with what you already have out! Another great way to transition to fall is with your textiles. Swap out your throw pillows, blankets and floor cushions for more neutral and warm hues. It may be too early for pumpkins, so for right now stick to other traditional fall produce like pears, apples or figs!

My strategy this time of year is to walk around my home and pull anything that feels too “summery.” These are things with a lot of color, bright florals, or things that have a beachy or coastal vibe. Then I’ll go through and fill the holes with the examples from above. A lot of these things I already have and use throughout the year in various spots in my home. Right now it’s more about strategic styling with the new warm, fall color palette. For example, I use the wood pedestal, cement pear, and small potted tree year round. To dress them up for this transitional time I’ll pair them with some amber votives or brass candlesticks and they’ll instantly be transformed into the perfect fall accessories! You’d be surprised what you already have in your decor collection that can be used for multiple seasons with the right pairings. See examples below!

Below are my picks for some really great fall transitional home decor pieces! Notice the consistent color palette. This really is the key! Be sure to shop your home first before purchasing anything new. I always like to take inventory of what I already have and plan to use before spending on new items.

| Thistle Arrangement | Potted Tree | Wood Pedestal | Votive Tray | Cement Pear |
