An area rug can make or break a room, and it can also make or break a budget! I personally am a budget rug shopper. With small children and pets, it makes absolutely zero sense for me to spend hundreds of dollars on a rug. They’re all inevitably going to get spilled on and have dirt tracked over them, so I just can’t bring myself to purchase high dollar rugs. I also like to change out my rugs every couple years. It’s a great way to give a room a refresh without spending too much.
Today I’m going to share with you my favorite area rugs on a budget. Here are some things to keep in mind when shopping for a new rug for your home:
- Color Palette – Start here. Do you want your rug to blend with your existing paint color. flooring and decor? Or do you want something more bold to make a statement?
- Style – There are a lot of options to choose from here. From traditional and oriental to vintage distressed and geometric. The options are endless. Again, consider the room and it’s existing decor. It helps if you can narrow down your pattern style so you don’t have hundreds of rugs to sort through while browsing!
- Size – Very important. Choosing a rug that’s too small can make your room appear smaller. Not sure what size you need? Measure out various rug sizes in your room and tape off the corners with painter’s tape. This will help you get a good visual of how the rug will work in your space.
- Material – Do you have a preference? Lower cost rugs are usually made from polypropylene and/or polyester. Do you want some shine? Then consider rugs made from viscose as well. Want something more earthy and textured? Consider rugs made from natural fibers.
- Pile – How low or high do you want your pile? I prefer low-medium height so that it’s easier to clean and vacuum.
- Pads – Be sure to include a rug pad in your budget. These are essential to protect your flooring. I prefer to use thicker felt pads on my larger area rugs where I want some extra cushion underfoot. I opt for the low cost rug gripper pads on runners and smaller accent rugs.
Let’s get to my picks! No matter your style, you should find something that works for you below. Some of these rugs I personally own and love. These are all curated by me and I would not recommend anything that I would not purchase for my own home. Rugs are essential in finishing out a space.
